I want to keep you filled in on a few "in's and out's" of my Language Arts class.
- The composition book: The monthly reading log is stapled in the back. Classwork will be in the front of the composition book. Stem work will be in the back of the composition book. This book goes back and forth from home to class each day.
- The folder with brads: This folder will stay in the classroom. It is for class notes. If a student has homework and they think they will need their notes, they can take the folder home. It must come back the next day.
- Silent Reading book: Students will need a book to read with them in class everyday. They are welcome to use one of the books I have on my shelves, but they must check it out and keep it until they are done-this cuts down on them having to visit the shelf everyday. We visit the Media Center every two weeks, so this is a great opportunity to get books. They can check out three books at a time, as long as they don't have past or overdue books.
- Reading Log: Students should be reading 15 minutes per day OR 90 minutes total per week. If there is a day that your schedule isn't conducive to reading, they are welcome to double up another day. As long as the total is 90 minutes at the end of the week, they can split it up however it's convenient. On Mondays, I will be checking for the 90 minutes, your initials at the end of the week, and one box filled out on the back. Please make sure your child has completed the reading AND one box before you initial it.
- Points: There is a positive point system (team points) and a negative point system (individual points) in my classroom. Teams can earn points for members being prepared, participating in discussions, being organized, and any other general display of PRIDE. The team points will add up throughout the quarter, and there will be periodic rewards. Individual students can earn negative points for things like being disruptive, off task, defiant, missing work, etc. This negative system is how I decide what consequences to give and when I need to contact home or write a referral. If your child receives more than 3 points in a day for negative behavior, I will be contacting you.
- Remind 101: This is a really neat system where you can receive text messages with updates from my class. Text @rodis to (240)297-7779. The updates will come from that same number each time (it's not my phone number...it's a computer program), so you can save it in your phone as "Rodis Updates." I will send reminders about reading logs, due dates, and homework using this system.
As always, let me know if you have any questions or concerns!
